Betty Gillespie

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints” Psalm 116:15

With much sadness but fond memories, Whitewell said goodbye to one of its own this week – our wee Betty Gillespie, who passed away recently following an illness. For well over 30 years Betty and her equally faithful husband Billy, who died a few years ago, served the Lord and this fellowship with distinction.

Betty was described at her thanksgiving service on Monday 20th May as “a pastors dream” – and by someone who should know – Pastor McConnell. He recalled Betty and Billy coming into Whitewell together to our former church on the Whitewell Road and getting saved. He added “Betty is also someone I would describe as one of God’s hidden ones. She never sought to be recognised but behind the scenes, she was involved in everything from singing in the choir to making cakes and buns, and even went out on to the streets to evangelise the neighbourhood. They don’t make them like that anymore.” Officiating at the service with Pastor McConnell, were Pastor David Purse and Pastor Shaw Higgins. Pastor McConnell said “I have no worries about Betty. She is with the Lord, who is well pleased with her and waiting for the rest of us who will meet her again someday soon.”  Betty will be sadly missed by all of us who remember her willingness, gentleness and courage as she battled illness in her later years.
